A New Labour Lie
(Original song: American Pie by Don McLean)

A long long time ago
When I can still remember how the Tories used to make me mad
But when I voted on the day
For Tony and his new third way
I never thought I’d feel so used
But education’s more or less
Still messed up like the NHS
My pension is in freefall
My savings are worth sod all
I really wanted to believe
But I’ve had it with your greed and sleaze
That does explain at least to me
The day New Labour died

(REFRAIN)
You lied, lied, Tony Blair you lied
You told us you were whiter
Than a Jody Marsh smile
Purer than the pope and even Princess Di
But the sleaze let the Labour dream die
You greed let the Labour dream die

Did you write the book of sleaze
Or was it just a jolly wheeze
If your cronies told you so
Do you believe the mortgage rate
Will come on down before too late
And how long till the bailiffs start to show
Well I know your wife is on the make
With every tour she undertakes
You both think we’re all fools
By the way you bend the rules
You were once an eager wide-eyed buck
With dreams and drive and loads of pluck
But how you tried to ride your luck
The day New Labour died

I started singin’
(REFRAIN)

Now for three years since Blair took Iraq
He dodged the bullets but not the flack
And all things WMD
Then when Doctor Kelly caused a scene
The evidence was just not seen
It proved it wasn’t what Blair said it’d be
Oh and while the Blair’s were on a trip
David Kelly slit his wrists
Hutton was involved
Then Blair he was absolved
And while Campbell read the riot act
To Channel Four and the media pack
Democracy was pushed on back
The day New Labour died

I started singin’

(REFRAIN)

Helter skelter in a blind trust shelter
The Mail found out with a front page belter
Cherie was caught and caved in fast
All the lies and slight of hand
There wasn’t room for an honest man
With the press pack on the sidelines closin’ fast
Now the smell of cash was sweet perfume
While Campbell spun out a threatening tune
They all backed off at once
And the Blair’s still kept their bunce
Despite those loans and the dodgy deals
The grasping Blair’s refused to yield
Their greedy nature was revealed
The day New Labour died

I started singin’
(REFRAIN)

Oh and then your friends were all displaced
Resigned from office in disgrace
But all came back to start again
So come on cash for favours, pay it quick
Get a peerage or citizenship
‘Cause money is the premiers only friend
Oh and as I watched this farce unfold
I heard another bomb explode
Looks like we’re gonna pay
For Blair’s free holidays
And while Campbell spun the news that night
To help the Blair’s financial rite
I saw Cherie laughing with delight
The day New Labour died

I started singin’
(REFRAIN)

I met a girl, a staunch Blair babe
Who really thought she had it made
But Tessa hung her head in shame
Although they finally caught Saddam
I could not find Mondeo man
If you ask me he wasn’t ever there
And in the streets the demo’s roared
Against the sleaze and against the war
But though the spin was spoken
Their spirits were not broken
And the two men I abhor the most
Balir and Bush with their pious boasts
They left us with the bloody ghosts
The day that freedom died

And we are singin’
You lied, lied, Tony Blair you lied
You told us you were whiter
Than a Jody Marsh smile
Purer than the pope and even Princess Di
You let the New Labour dream die
